Some Local Lore

Updated: Sep 9, 2019

Is it haunted?

The space where the kitchen will be.

Many will tell you this house is. And we know many ghost tours have sold it that way for years. We all know truth is often replaced by fiction. You can search online for the address and read the many stories. But if you read most of them to the finish, they end up debunking their own tales.

Stories continue to unfold though! Two most recent are: "It is so haunted the new owners cannot find a builder willing to take on the project." So not true. Many wanted the job but we had to eventually pick one. And that builder has now started work on the home. Another is: "The house is so demonic the new owners had to put a fence around it to prevent people from touching it." Well, in reality, the fence is for construction safety.

Now, I'm not saying I can't understand why people might think it's haunted. After all, it has been empty for over 35 years and has fallen into disrepair. And we know that people were buried in and around Savannah's squares - those without means or social standing to have a proper burial.

Why was it empty so long you ask? The previous owners lived in the carriage house while they were trying to painstakingly restore the home. They peeled wallpaper and paint off the walls and stripped all the old paint off beautiful wood moldings. They also removed all the old fixtures to make the house a blank slate. But it was not enough to keep the house from water damage as the roof leaked and broken or missing windows allowed the elements to ravage some of the home.

With a lot of work though, the house will be restored.

And about the ghost stories? Truth does not win out in many cases. People believe what they want to believe. We've spent a ton of time in the house and have not felt anything negative. If there are spirits in the house, they are happy to be getting new digs!
